Leaking gutters at the premises of Mersen (UK Teeside) had been a problem for some time and Sharmans Plygene gutterline was recommended and installed by MDK Roofing Maintenance and Refurbishment Ltd.
The factory gutters had a history of leaking and a steel gutter lining system installed over the original asbestos gutter had also failed.
A water capacity survey was carried out and it was established that there weren’t enough outlets to cope with increasing rainfall and to accommodate a steel over roof (which disperses water faster than the original asbestos covering). Subsequently, two additional outlets and two overflow weirs per gutter were installed (four in total).
Mark Romaines for MDK said:
“There were a few challenges on this project but we are pleased that we were able to overcome them by using the Plygene gutterline system. Its system components are designed to work within any gutter system configuration, no matter the size or complexity and we have achieved a watertight solution without disrupting the business operations below.”
Billy Heffernan, Technical Services Manager for Sharmans said:
“Besides the reduced water capacity in the existing gutter system, there was an additional complication in that the roof overlay was at a higher level – we had to install a galvanised steel flashing to support the new roof and Plygene liner, prior to installation.
“We are happy to say that the installation was a resounding success and no further leaks have been reported despite heavy rainfall in the region recently.”
